About Property Tax Explorer

Our Mission

Property tax is one of the largest costs of homeownership in America, yet the data is scattered across thousands of county websites in inconsistent formats. We built Property Tax Explorer to change that — giving homebuyers, real estate investors, renters, and curious citizens one place to find and compare county-level property tax data across all 50 states.

Our Data

All data on this site is based on the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates for 2024, as compiled and published by the Tax Foundation. We track:

  • Median Home Value — the estimated market value of owner-occupied housing units
  • Median Property Taxes Paid — the median annual real estate tax paid by homeowners
  • Effective Property Tax Rate — median tax paid ÷ median home value × 100

We currently cover 3131 counties across 51 states and are continuously expanding our database.

Methodology

The effective property tax rate is a more useful metric than the nominal (statutory) rate because it reflects actual taxes paid relative to property value. It accounts for assessment ratios, exemptions, and other local factors that affect the real tax burden on homeowners.

Formula: Effective Rate = (Median Tax Paid / Median Home Value) × 100

Individual property tax bills may differ from our estimates based on your specific assessed value, personal exemptions (homestead, senior, veteran, disability), and special district assessments.
